Why Sail the British Virgin Islands?

If the Caribbean had a sailing playground, the British Virgin Islands would be it.

The islands are close together, the waters are warm and protected, and every short sail leads to a completely different experience. One morning you could be snorkeling with turtles, and by sunset you’re enjoying fresh seafood with your toes in the sand. Not a bad way to spend a week.

Most passages take just a couple of hours, you’ll spend more time exploring hidden coves, relaxing on deck, and swimming in turquoise waters instead of making long offshore crossings.

Day 1 - Peter Island: Your First Taste of Paradise

Sailing time: 0–1 hour (Depending on your charter base) Peter Island is just a short sail from most of the main charter marinas, making it the perfect first stop to ease into your British Virgin Islands sailing adventure.

After a day of travelling, Peter Island welcomes you with turquoise waters, lush green hills, and a peaceful anchorage that reminds you why you came to the Caribbean in the first place. Before long, the toughest decision you’ll face is whether to jump in for a swim now… or after lunch.

Many of our Barefoot Paradise guests tell us their holiday truly begins with that first swim in Deadman’s Bay. The calm, protected anchorage makes Peter Island an ideal first-night stop, giving first-time skippers and experienced sailors alike the chance to settle into the relaxed rhythm of sailing the British Virgin Islands.

👨‍✈️ What to Do

  1. Swim at Deadman’s Bay, where powder-soft sand and crystal-clear waters make your first Caribbean swim one to remember.
  2. Take the easy ridge hike for panoramic views across the Sir Francis Drake Channel. Your camera—or phone—is about to earn its keep.
  3. Snorkel just offshore in calm, clear waters and keep an eye out for colorful tropical fish gliding through the reefs.

🍛 Where to Eat

  1. Deadman’s Beach Bar & Grill – Fresh Caribbean seafood, beachfront dining, and a relaxed island atmosphere that’s perfect for your first evening in the British Virgin Islands.
Barefoot Tip

If you'd like to enjoy the restaurant or Peter Island's resort amenities, visiting yachts are generally required to reserve a dockage slip or purchase a day pass. It's worth planning ahead, especially during the busy charter season.

Family Tip

Peter Island is an ideal first stop for families. Calm swimming, wide sandy beaches, and plenty of space for children to explore making it easy for everyone to settle into holiday mode. Parents can finally exhale... at least until someone asks for another snack.

Day 2 - Cooper Island: Snorkeling Paradise

Sailing time: Approximately 1–1.5 hours

A short morning sail brings you to Cooper Island, one of the British Virgin Islands’ favorite eco-friendly destinations. Known for its crystal-clear waters and peaceful atmosphere, it’s the kind of place where plans quickly become optional.

💡 Highlights

  1. Snorkel at Cistern Point, where turtles are frequent visitors.
  2. Paddleboard across calm, sheltered bays.
  3. Swim directly from your yacht in some of the clearest waters in the BVI.

🍛 Where to Eat

The Cooper Island Beach Club is famous for oceanfront dining, an impressive rum selection, and a relaxed island vibe that pairs perfectly with sunset.

Day 3 - North Sound, Virgin Gorda: The Heart of BVI Sailing

Sailing time: Approximately 2–3 hours

Cruise into North Sound, one of the most protected and iconic sailing destinations in the British Virgin Islands. Surrounded by world-class marinas, sheltered anchorages, and spectacular scenery, it’s a favorite stop for sailors exploring the BVI.

⚠️ Don't Miss

  1. Explore The Baths, where enormous granite boulders create winding passages, hidden caves, and natural seawater pools unlike anywhere else in the Caribbean.
  2. Hike the trail through the famous rock formations before cooling off with a swim in the crystal-clear water.
  3. Spend the afternoon exploring the sheltered bays or simply relax aboard while watching yachts glide through the Sound.

🍛 Where to Eat

One of the things we love about North Sound is that you can enjoy three completely different dining experiences without sailing very far. Whether you’re celebrating a great day’s sail or simply watching the sun set over the anchorage, these are all favorites with our Barefoot Paradise guests.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family-Friendly Activities

North Sound is one of our favorite stops for families because the sheltered waters make it easy to relax while the kids stay active.

  1. Safe swimming in calm, protected bays
  2. Paddleboarding and kayaking around the marina
  3. Easy waterfront walks with beautiful views across Virgin Gorda

Day 4 - Anegada or Marina Cay: Two Great Choices, One Easy Decision

This is where your itinerary becomes uniquely yours.

If you’re looking for wide-open beaches, incredible seafood, and a true escape from the crowds, head for Anegada. If you’d rather enjoy a shorter sail with excellent snorkeling and a relaxed afternoon, Marina Cay is a wonderful alternative.

Neither choice is wrong—it simply depends on the kind of day you’re looking for

Option A - Anegada : The British Virgin Islands' Hidden Gem

Sailing time: Approximately 2.5–3 hours

Ask ten experienced BVI sailors which island surprised them the most, and Anegada usually tops the list.

Unlike the mountainous islands that make up the rest of the British Virgin Islands, Anegada is a low-lying coral atoll surrounded by miles of reef, powder-soft beaches, and some of the clearest waters in the Caribbean. The pace is slower, the beaches are quieter, and it’s wonderfully easy to lose track of time—in the best possible way.

At Barefoot Paradise, guests who make the journey to Anegada almost always tell us the same thing: “We wish we’d stayed another night.”

💡Highlights

  1. Spend the morning at Loblolly Bay, one of the best beaches in the British Virgin Islands for swimming, snorkeling, and simply unwinding.
  2. Enjoy lunch at Cow Wreck Beach, where colorful beach bars, swaying palms, and famous rum punches define island life.
  3. Look for the island’s graceful pink flamingos in the protected salt ponds.
  4. Visit Conch Island, a quirky local landmark built over decades from thousands of discarded conch shells.

🍛 Where to Eat

Fresh lobster has become almost synonymous with Anegada, and for good reason.

💥 Explore Like a Local

  1. Rent a Moke or scooter and cruise the quiet roads, with ocean views stretching out on both sides.
  2. Go horseback riding along the beach for one of the most unforgettable experiences in the British Virgin Islands (BVI).
  3. Beach-hop your way around Anegada, where every stretch of coastline has its own personality. Just when you’re convinced you’ve found your favorite beach, another one comes along to change your mind.

🧭 Bareboat Charter Navigation Advice

As much as we love recommending Anegada, it’s also the one destination where preparation really matters.

The approach crosses extensive coral reefs that can appear deceptively straightforward, particularly in good weather. Every year, visiting skippers discover that charts and navigation briefings are far more useful than optimism.

Before setting off:

  1. Review your chart briefing carefully.
  2. Confirm your GPS route and waypoints before departure.
  3. Never rely on visual navigation alone.
  4. If conditions are uncertain, don’t hesitate to wait for better light or weather.

It’s also worth remembering that Anegada is much farther from the main charter bases than the rest of the islands. Assistance may take considerably longer to reach you, making good planning even more important.

Our advice is simple: respect the passage, enjoy the destination, and you’ll be rewarded with one of the most unforgettable stops in the Caribbean.

Option B - Marina Cay: Short Sail, Big Rewards

Sailing time: Approximately 1–1.5 hours

If you’d rather keep today’s sailing short, Marina Cay is an excellent choice.

Just a short hop from Virgin Gorda, this peaceful little island offers protected anchorages, clear water, and easy snorkeling—perfect for families, first-time sailors, or anyone who believes vacation should be more hammock than schedule

🍛 Where to Eat

💥 Perfect For

  1. Families with younger children
  2. Easy snorkeling straight from the yacht
  3. Gentle swimming in protected waters
  4. A relaxed afternoon with nowhere else to be

Day 5: Choose Your Next Adventure

By Day 5, you’d have settled into the relaxed rhythm of sailing the British Virgin Islands, and today’s route depends on where yesterday’s adventure took you. Whether you explored the remote beauty of Anegada or enjoyed the easy pace of Marina Cay, both options lead to another unforgettable day on the water.

Option A : Marina Cay to Cane Garden Bay

Sailing time: Approximately 1–1.5 hours

If you spent the night at Marina Cay, a short sail to Cane Garden Bay on Tortola is the perfect stop before continuing to Jost Van Dyke. Fringed by palm trees and backed by lush green hills, it’s one of the British Virgin Islands’ most popular beaches—and for good reason.

👨‍✈️ What to Do

  1. Swim in the calm, sheltered bay, where the crystal-clear water is perfect for families and a refreshing morning dip.
  2. Visit the historic Callwood Rum Distillery, one of the Caribbean’s oldest family-run rum distilleries. Step inside for a glimpse into traditional rum-making—and don’t be surprised if you leave with a bottle you hadn’t planned on buying.
  3. Stroll along the beach and browse the local shops for island souvenirs.
  4. Rent a paddleboard or kayak and enjoy a different view of the bay from the water.
  5. Relax on the soft sand and let island time take over. By now, checking your watch probably feels like far too much effort.
  6. Enjoy live music at one of the beachfront bars if your visit coincides with a local performance.

🍛 Where to Eat

Option B : Anegada to Marina Cay

Sailing time: Approximately 2.5–3 hours

If Day 4 was spent exploring Anegada’s pristine beaches and famous lobster restaurants, today is a great opportunity to sail south to Marina Cay. The shorter afternoon leaves plenty of time to unwind, enjoy the calm anchorage, and reflect on another memorable day in the British Virgin Islands.

👨‍✈️ What to Do

  1. Snorkel the nearby reefs, where colorful tropical fishes are often just a few fin kicks away.
  2. Take a leisurely swim in the calm, protected anchorage.
  3. Watch the yachts come and go, preferably with something cold in your hand.
  4. Enjoy a gentle walk around Marina Cay before settling in for another spectacular Caribbean sunset.

🍛 Where to Eat

📚 Barefoot Tip

One of the best parts of a British Virgin Islands yacht charter is the freedom to change your plans. If you discover a beach you can’t bear to leave or hear about a hidden anchorage from another sailor, go with it. Some of the best BVI memories begin with the words, “We decided to stay one more night.”

Day 6 - Jost Van Dyke: Where the Good Times Meet Great Sailing

Sailing time: Approximately 2–3 hours

Ask almost any sailor to name their favorite stop in the British Virgin Islands, and Jost Van Dyke will usually make the shortlist. It’s famous for its legendary beach bars, but there’s much more to this little island than a great cocktail.

One thing we’ve noticed after helping hundreds of Barefoot Paradise guests plan their BVI sailing holidays is that many arrive expecting a lively party island and leave talking just as much about the quiet beaches, scenic walks, and laid-back atmosphere.

If you arrive earlier in the day, you’ll often enjoy White Bay before many of the day boats arrive—a perfect time for a peaceful swim or paddleboard in the crystal-clear water.

💡 Highlights

  1. Relax on the powder-soft sands of White Bay, one of the Caribbean’s most beautiful beaches.
  2. Drop anchor in Great Harbour, the social heart of Jost Van Dyke and a favorite overnight stop for sailors.
  3. Follow one of the island’s easy hiking trails for panoramic views across the surrounding cays.
  4. Visit the Bubbly Pool, where Atlantic swells create a natural sea pool that’s every bit as entertaining as it sounds.

🍛 Where to Eat

From legendary beach bars to hidden local favorites, Jost Van Dyke serves up some of the best beachfront dining in the British Virgin Islands (BVI). Whether you’re stopping in for fresh seafood, a famous Painkiller, or simply soaking up the island atmosphere, these spots are well worth dropping the anchor for.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family-Friendly Activities

Despite its famous nightlife, Jost Van Dyke is also a fantastic destination for families.

  1. Calm, shallow swimming areas for younger sailors.
  2. Spacious beaches for games and sandcastle competitions.
  3. Easy hiking trails with rewarding island views.
  4. Snorkeling and fish spotting just offshore in clear, warm water.

Day 7 - Norman Island: End Your Charter on a High Note

Sailing time: Approximately 2–3 hours

Your final stop is Norman Island, one of the most iconic destinations on any British Virgin Islands sailing itinerary. Steeped in pirate legends and widely believed to have inspired Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, it’s the perfect place to reflect on a week well spent.

If we had to choose one anchorage to end a BVI charter, Norman Island would be high on the list. The combination of calm waters, excellent snorkeling, scenic hiking, and unforgettable sunsets makes it a fitting farewell before returning to base.

💡 Highlights

  1. Snorkel at The Caves, one of the BVI’s best-known underwater sites. Midday often offers the best visibility, as sunlight streams through the caves and lights up the reef below.
  2. Enjoy one last swim in warm Caribbean waters.
  3. Watch the sun set over one of the British Virgin Islands’ most beautiful anchorages.
  4. Stretch your legs on one of the island’s hiking trails for sweeping views across the Sir Francis Drake Channel.
  5. Visit The Willy T, the famous floating bar that’s become a rite of passage for many sailors. Whether you’re there for lunch or just the atmosphere, it’s a memorable way to finish your adventure.

Barefoot Paradise Sailing Tips

After years of helping guests explore the British Virgin Islands, we’ve discovered that the little things often make the biggest difference.

  1. Set sail early whenever possible. Morning conditions are often calmer, anchorages are quieter, and you’ll have more time to explore each destination.
  2. Reserve popular restaurants during the busy winter season, especially on Jost Van Dyke and Anegada.
  3. Keep your snorkeling gear close by. Some of the BVI’s best marine life is only a few fin kicks from your yacht.
  4. Even though the islands are close together, always keep an eye on the weather forecast and sea conditions before setting off.
  5. Pack reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water. The Caribbean sun is wonderfully generous—it doesn’t believe in doing anything halfway.

A Final Word from Barefoot Paradise

There’s a reason so many sailors return to the British Virgin Islands year after year.

It’s not because they managed to see everything.

It’s because they discovered there’s always one more hidden anchorage, one more beach to explore, one more sunset worth lingering for, and one more island that somehow wasn’t on the original plan.

That’s the beauty of sailing the BVI.

At Barefoot Paradise, we believe the best itineraries leave room for spontaneity. Some of our guests discover a favorite beach they never expected to visit. Others stay an extra night because the anchorage is simply too beautiful to leave. Those unplanned moments often become the stories you’ll remember long after you’ve stepped back ashore.

Whether you’re planning your first British Virgin Islands yacht charter or returning for another adventure, we hope this itinerary helps you experience the islands the way they’ve always been meant to be explored—one easy sail, one unforgettable anchorage, and one barefoot sunset at a time.

We can’t promise you’ll want to go home afterwards… but we can say you’re in very good company if you start planning your next charter before you’ve even unpacked.
